Should anyone ask, I’m getting good at German

Sorry for the non German speakers/carrier sympathisers but,

My German is improving. From the ePlus (mobile carrier in Germany) website we have this:

“E-Plus bietet Ihnen mit International Roaming die Möglichkeit, in vielen Ländern die mobile Datenkommunikation via GPRS zu nutzen.

"Die Kosten für Datenübertragung im Ausland sind vom jeweiligen Roaming Partner und dessen Preisen für GPRS abhängig. Die aktuellen Tarife finden Sie”

Allow me to translate for you: “We would like to screw you so hard on mobile data pricing when you travel that you will be permanently discouraged from ever touching mobile data services again”

One of my favourite BBC Radio 4 programs is Just a Minute.  The object of the game is to talk “For just a minute” on a given subject, “without repetition, hesitation or deviation”. The humour comes from the panellists’ attempts to try to keep within these rules, which whilst they appear to be simple, are very hard not to break. Therefore, to speak for the full minute without being challenged is extremely difficult, and meritorious when achieved.

My last run done, The race is on Sunday. “Hold the thumbs” “cross the fingers”.

I really enjoy training with a GPS. It’s interesting to see my pace decreasing towards the middle of a run then picking up at the end.

A friend came over with a large disk. 200GB had to be shifted, sharpish. I have a separate vlan dedicated to shunting data round. It’s jumbo frames enabled. Rather than a graph, this screenshot demonstrates the speed nicely:

Should anyone ask, Microsoft doesn’t understand reverse DNS

What the hell is Microsoft up with with their “let’s invent new top level domains for our in-arpa records”?

Today’s scanning of the log files revealed:

Should you feel like you missed out on yet-another-pointless-tld, you didn’t. No, instead of mapping the reverse DNS to a real domain, Microsoft has arbirarily chosen to invent a new top level domain and break all log-analysis software in the process. There is no PHX.GBL. There is no .GBL.

I have 2 opinions on why they have done this:

  • Microsoft don’t want webmasters identifying their spiders
  • They are incompetent

For gods sake, if you don’t want to populate your reverse DNS, leave it empty.

Pleased I stopped relying on their products for infrastructure long ago.
